Wireless and Telecom Expert and Speaker Available to Comment on News

ATLANTA, July 8, 2009 — Wireless and telecom industry analyst Jeff Kagan is available to provide the media with opinion and comment on industry news. Over the last 20 years Kagan has covered the companies and the changing telecom industry, especially cellular and wireless, local and long-distance telephone, high-speed Internet and television. Based in the Atlanta area, he is one of the most noted telecom industry analysts in the United States.

Jeff Kagan is a popular speaker at company and industry meetings and conferences offering his opinion on What's Hot, What's Not and What's Next. He talks about changing industry trends and the direction we are heading, looking at who's winning, who's losing and why.

He follows the competitive moves of wireless and wireline companies like AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Clearwire, Qwest, CenturyTel, Embarq, Time Warner Telecom, Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG, Sony Ericsson, and the emerging smartphone makers like Apple iPhone, RIM Blackberry, Palm Pre, Samsung, HTC and others. Also equipment companies like Lucent, Nortel, Cisco and assorted competitors changing the wireless space like Apple and Google and Microsoft and more.

The industry has grown and changed dramatically since the big bang in 1984 that broke up AT&T into 7 baby bells and one long-distance giant. The Telecom Act of 1996 was the new rules of competition, but that only lasted a few years. The baby bells won. They acquired the long-distance companies and now they are competing with the cable television companies and others.

Ten years ago we thought we knew the direction the industry was headed. We were wrong. Today we also think we know. Will we be wrong again? Yes. The industry changes so quickly. New competitors. New technology. New marketplace. New laws and regulations. Every few years it's a new and different industry.

It is changing again. The Justice Department has started to look into exclusivity of devices offered by wireless carriers, and other things, after years of mergers. This is similar to the 1990s under President Clinton. The last 8 years under President Bush was more of a hands-off time. Now under President Obama we are taking a closer look again. The industry has changed since the 1990s. There were many smaller competitors, then a series of mergers have resulted in fewer, larger competitors.

What's next? There is so much change to cover in the changing wireline and wireless industry.

Consider Jeff Kagan as a resource to help you understand wireless and telecom stories. Kagan has been called to comment on thousands of stories over the years and is available as an industry expert.
