Wireless Fronthaul and Backhaul: Slow Start, but a Market Will Emerge in the Long Haul

Mobile Experts releases a new report on connecting the HetNet

CAMPBELL, Calif., Dec. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Mobile Experts released a report on Backhaul and Fronthaul for the HetNet today. The report analyzes the various methods to connect small cells and Remote Radio Heads (RRH), with special attention on the economics of wireless vs. fiber backhaul and fronthaul. In particular, this report highlights specific applications that justify the use of wireless technologies in a world where fiber has become the obvious first choice.

"The small cell market has been slow to emerge, leaving many start-up companies with innovative wireless technology and a very small market size," explained Dr. Jonathan Wells, Principal Analyst for Backhaul at Mobile Experts. "Meanwhile, RAN architectures with centralized baseband processing are becoming commonplace, and effective fronthaul to the RRH is a larger market pool."

"While most of the HetNet runs on fiber, we're finding that there is a significant market for wireless solutions in the practical aspects of real-world deployment.   With busy streets, historic buildings, and other obstructions, wireless technology has a definite place in the HetNet. This report provides a quantitative view of where wireless links fit in, and the eventual size of the wireless market."

By 2019, 45% of outdoor small base stations will be backhauled wirelessly, and a billion-dollar market will emerge for wireless connectivity in centralized RAN and HetNets. This report provides cost analysis of wireless and fiber approaches, including a view of millimeter-wave line-of-sight (LOS) systems, microwave backhaul, and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) links. Clear and concise charts and diagrams explain this research and more in this fresh perspective.
