With a background in geriatric neuropsychiatry, Dr. Van Horn has the credentials and experience to justify his position as an expert in the field of Alzheimer's disease treatment and research. He has worked closely with hundreds of patients and families during his time as medical director of an inpatient Alzheimer's unit. Today, Dr. Van Horn is on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Unsatisfied with traditional approaches to Alzheimer's disease, Dr. Van Horn painstakingly developed his own protocols for both preventing the onset of dementia and slowing its progress once it was diagnosed. He realized that traditional medicine was more reactive than proactive. His mission, therefore, has been to overcome the sense of defeatism that has long been the dominant theme in conventional Alzheimer's treatment.

"Alzheimer's disease affects not only the person diagnosed, but also the immediate family and caregivers," explained Dr. Van Horn. "Sadly, most treatment regimens neglect the social and psychological aspect of the disease and deal only with symptom management. My work has focused on the positive steps everyone can take to not only slow the advance of Alzheimer's disease, but lower one's odds of developing the disease in the first place."

Dr. Van Horn continued: "My treatment addresses every stage of memory loss, from prevention to advanced Alzheimer's disease. For those who are caring for a loved one in the later stages of the disease, I offer effective ways to restore dignity to the patient. While a cure for Alzheimer's is likely still years away, treatments exist today that can measurably reduce the pain and suffering of those afflicted."

Much of Dr. Van Horn's work has been published in layman's terms on his website, www.protectyourbrain.com. He has also created an 8-part DVD series, "The Alzheimer's Journey," which is a valuable resource for people and families dealing with any stage of the disease.
