ATLANTA, Dec. 20, 2010 — Georgia writer, actor and producer Tyler Perry has helped at-risk youth in our nation's communities continue learning to BE SOMEONE through his amazing act of generosity.
Orrin "Checkmate" Hudson announced that Mr. Perry has stepped forward to match an anonymous $14,000 donation that will save the struggling BE SOMEONE youth center from a December 31st deadline to make critical improvements which, if not completed, would have meant the closure of the BE SOMEONE center.
Mr. Perry had initially asked to remain anonymous as well, but decided instead to go public to show solidarity and support for the BE SOMEONE crime prevention program, which in the past 10 years has helped thousands of youth across America learn life skills through the game of chess.
"We are training champions through the BE SOMEONE program and Mr. Perry has been our champion in our greatest time of need," said Mr. Hudson. "We are incredibly grateful and humbled by Mr. Perry's tremendous gift as well as those of our other donors. I have never lost my belief in the American spirit that drives good people to help others in their time of need. Once again I have seen how those people, compelled by their desire to make a difference, have come forward to assist in this life-changing work."
Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Perry and other donors, BE SOMEONE will be able to continue to make a difference daily through the life mastery skills and community enrichment the organization offers. Chess is not just a game; it is doorway into training for self-improvement that will serve these children for the rest of their lives. BE SOMEONE encourages others who are able to join its work, by volunteering or through their charitable contributions, to come forward and help the at-risk children of their communities learn to BE SOMEONE.
