Tutoring Program Fights to Keep Spokane Kids in School, Offers 'Learning Built to Last'

New Club Z! Area Director Roger Gilstrap believes study skill programs and one-on-one tutoring offer struggling students the best chance at success

SPOKANE, Wash., Nov. 16, 2010 — With local high school dropout rates reportedly as high as 40% in recent years, Spokane kids are clearly in trouble. We already know the bad news: this isn't a problem that can be solved overnight, by any one school district, tutoring agency, or group of concerned parents.

Luckily, however, local education professionals have not yet given up the fight. New Club Z! Area Director Roger Gilstrap has been reading about Spokane's appalling city and county dropout rates for several years. As a longtime area resident and teacher of middle school, high school, university classes, and adult education, he felt he could best help by purchasing and operating a Club Z! franchise in the Spokane area.

"I have done private tutoring in the past, and I have a passion for both kids and education," Mr. Gilstrap explains. "I believe that tutoring such as that which Club Z! provides — done in the student's home, one-on-one, and requiring no long term contracts — provides the best opportunity for success for the student, as well as the most affordable option for parents."

With over 350 franchise locations throughout the U.S., Club Z!'s methods are well-known and time-tested. Students are taught in the privacy and security of their own homes, where distractions are reduced and tutors can offer their undivided attention. Students tend to feel more comfortable and confident, progressing more quickly, and parents enjoy the flexible scheduling and frequent progress reports that the tutors provide.

Club Z! offers tutoring in all standard subject areas to students of all ages and abilities, but their study skills program is an area of particular usefulness in improving students' long-term academic prospects.  "One of our unique programs is the Learning Built to Last study skills program," explains Mr. Gilstrap.  "It is available for middle and high school students. It is a 30 hour program, primarily designed for the summer season, but available year round." Learning Built to Last aims to help students identify and practice the study and organizational skills necessary for academic success.

Spokane area students may also want to take advantage of Club Z!'s standardized test preparation programs — especially since these programs cover more than just college entrance exams. According to Mr. Gilstrap, "We have Fairchild Air Force base in the area, and a lot of young adults are attracted to the military, so we offer ASVAB tutoring services. We also provide ACT/SAT and GED prep tutoring."  Whatever career or opportunities students wish to pursue, Club Z! can help them get the test scores they need.

At this point, the good news for Spokane students and parents is that the fight continues, and services such as those provided by Club Z! offer them somewhere to turn. Although the battle to keep kids in school is likely to rage for years, thanks to Club Z! and other area schools, programs, and agencies, kids who want a brighter future can be led back toward their potential — one by one.

In honor of the Spokane Club Z!'s recent grand opening, registration fees have been waived for all new clients until the end of the month.
