TiaLinx, Inc. Announces Phase I DARPA SBIR Award; Project to Develop Wafer Scale Integration of Active Antenna Array for Military and Commercial Applications

IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 9, 2004 — TiaLinx, Inc., a developer of Integrated Active Antenna Arrays, today announced that it has been awarded a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase I award from the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). The objective of this program with the DARPA is to validate and develop an approach to wafer-scale integration of phased-array antenna electronics, focusing on wafer-scale interconnects for radio frequency (RF) and control signals. Compared to conventional active array technology, the integrated wafer will offer advantages in cost, weight, and manufacturing precision.

As part of the agreement, TiaLinx, Inc. has partnered with Stanford University to address feasibility of implementing innovative interconnects using patented wafer scale antenna module (WSAM(TM)) and distributed active antenna array (D3A(TM)) technologies of TiaLinx. A typical active-array antenna is a planar array of small antenna elements spaced one-half wavelength apart in two dimensions. Behind each antenna is an electronic element that controls transmit and receive function of signals at a desired direction.

"We are excited about this Phase I SBIR award from the DARPA, as it points to the significance of the technologies we are developing," commented Dr. Fred Mohamadi, Founder and CEO of TiaLinx. "Our small-footprint, low-cost, low-power, and highly integrated beamforming technology uniquely positions us to introduce phased array systems in the future that will revolutionize advancements in multi-discipline DOD industries while introducing our presence in emerging commercial markets."

High resolution RF beamforming technology of TiaLinx addresses applications such as early warning radar, ad hoc communication, point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless connectivity, radiometry and passive-medical imaging, mobility aids for blinds, homeland security and surveillance, and collision avoidance systems.
