Syska Hennessy Group Healthcare Project Receives Engineering Excellence Gold Award

New Danbury Hospital patient tower and emergency department honored for pioneering healthcare facility design

NEW YORK, Dec. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Syska Hennessy Group, Inc. (Syska Hennessy), a global consulting, engineering, and commissioning firm, announced that Danbury Hospital's new 11-story patient tower and brand new emergency department (ER), received an Engineering Excellence Gold Award from the renowned American Council of Engineering Companies New York Chapter (ACEC NY).

Completed in June 2014, this celebrated project features reliable, innovative design solutions to meet Danbury Hospital's goals in providing superior "patient-centered" care, decreasing energy consumption, and increasing their capacity to serve and treat a growing patient population. Some of the unique engineering design features included enhanced filtration for air handling units located near the hospital's helipad; an energy-efficient radiant floor heating and cooling system for the lobby entrance; and an entrance snow melting system.

Syska also designed state-of-the-art energy recovery and clean air systems to the ER. Patient rooms were designed with enhanced features that include multiple lighting controls; smart thermostat design for cooling/heating systems; and an ease of maintenance that supports infection control.  When compared to a baseline model for a similar facility, the Syska design is 36 percent more energy efficient.

"This truly is an honor for Syska. I am proud of our Syska Hennessy team and none of this would have been possible without the collaborative efforts of The SLAM Collaborative architects and the Gilbane construction team, as well as the Danbury Hospital staff and leadership," said Timothy Krawetz, vice president with Syska Hennessy Group.
