Chess champion brings unique use of chess to teach life's lessons to young men
DALLAS, June 10, 2011 —
WHAT: Comedian Steve Harvey is hosting a Father's Day Mentoring Weekend designed to provide positive lessons and role models to Dallas-area young people, many who are at risk of never realizing successful, productive futures. Once again, Harvey has invited Orrin "Checkmate" Hudson to participate to bring his innovative, unique use of the game of chess to teach lessons that can make a difference in young lives. Hudson participated in Harvey's last Mentoring event in Los Angeles in February.
WHEN: The Steve Harvey Mentoring Weekend for Young Men will be held Father's Day weekend, June 16-19, 2011. Hudson's presentation will be on Saturday, June 18, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: Steve Harvey's Dallas, TX ranch (120 acres)
WHO: Orrin "Checkmate" Hudson, founder of BE SOMEONE, will appear with other celebrities and business professionals for the four-day event. Orrin will use his signature chess skills and abilities as he offers advice on the importance of making every move in life count. Hudson has trained more than 20,000 students and his lifetime goal is to reach one million youngsters.
He is a believer in the "paying it forward concept." He explains, "I was a young know-it-all teenager in Alabama and I was on the road to certain destruction and possibly even a premature death," he readily admits. "But I had a teacher who saw potential in me. I'm not sure what that was but he taught me the game of chess."
Hudson, a former Alabama State Trooper, is quick to say that seemingly simple act "saved my life; it kept me on the straight and narrow." His mission now is to save other lives. His appearance with Harvey's team is the next stop on his quest.
