Society of Insurance Research Offers 'Insurance Fundamentals' Course

CHICAGO, March 4, 2010 — Designed to build a foundation for understanding the business of insurance, Insurance Fundamentals is a one-day course that will familiarize attendees with the key terminology, processes, and market dynamics of this complex industry.

Curriculum will include:

How Insurance Works – How insurance companies earn and measure revenue.

Lines Of Business – A brief overview of property, casualty, specialty lines, life, health, and other lines of business.

Terminology – Like many industries, insurance has its own "language." This course will decode some of the acronyms and jargon used in the business.

Regulatory Environment – Who regulates insurance and key issues affecting the industry today.

Risk Management – How insurance fits into a risk management program, risk management principles, and how they drive the insurance process.

Determining Insurability – What makes a risk insurable and how companies make this determination.

Distribution Systems – Identification of traditional and emerging distribution channels, focusing on systems relevant to today's marketplace.

Major Functional Areas – Job families within an insurance company, how they fit, and what people do. Both home office and field operation positions will be discussed.

After successfully offering this course at California State University – Fullerton, the Society of Insurance Research (SIR) is once again offering the program on April 26, 2010 in conjunction with DePaul University in Chicago. Future dates are planned in the Northeast and elsewhere. Taught by Howard Goldstein, Principal of The Glen Ellyn Consulting Group, LLC, this course is very popular with vendors who want to effectively communicate with their insurance carrier clients, new insurance employees, and law firms and risk managers who deal with insurers.

About the Instructor

Mr. Howard Goldstein has extensive experience in the insurance industry spanning over 25 years with CNA, CIGNA, and Zurich in various leadership positions. Howard is an adjunct professor at Chicago's DePaul University where he created the insurance curriculum.
