Smart Sense Technology Detects Shoppers in Retail Stores

Keeping store teams abreast of in-store activity increases sales and reduces theft

LONG BEACH, Calif., June 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — National Retail Federation Loss Prevention Conference — Indyme, a leading provider of real-time shopper engagement and loss prevention technologies, announced today the introduction of Smart Sense Dwell™, the latest addition to the Smart Sense solutions suite that empowers store teams with real time awareness of sales opportunities and suspicious activities.

Smart Sense Dwell notifies staff of browsing shoppers.

Retailers are aware of the tremendous benefits realized through proactive customer engagement but it is not practical for store staff to cover every corner of a store at all times.  Smart Sense Dwell bridges this gap by detecting the presence of interested shoppers at high value merchandise locations, then providing real time notifications to staff.  Empowered with this actionable information, store staff can efficiently engage shoppers at critical sales locations throughout the store.

In addition to building sales through increased customer engagement, the resulting presence of retail staff at high-risk merchandise locations has been shown to significantly reduce shrink.  Thieves thrive in obscure locations where they can pilfer merchandise unnoticed – vigilant and present store staff drives this unwanted activity to less attentive stores.

Once mounted at a key merchandise location, the small wireless Smart Sense Dwell module detects the presence of one or more persons in the defined area of interest.  Typically, people simply passing through the area are ignored but shoppers browsing the merchandise trigger a discreet notification to store staff via two-way radios, wireless smart devices, or other communication methods.

In addition to staff notifications, the sensor outputs a local "chime", which has also proven to significantly deter theft.   Potential thieves fear what they don't understand or anything that draws attention to them, yet this simple chime is typically unnoticed by honest shoppers.

Smart Sense Dwell joins the recently introduced Smart Sense Touch™ module, which detects shoppers actually handling or touching merchandise on fixture shelves and peg hooks, to provide increased awareness of sales floor activity.  This diversity in sales floor activity detection methods permits matching the most appropriate tool to various merchandise situations.  The company plans to expand the Smart Sense family with additional sensing mechanisms in the future – all focused on improving retail store performance.

Joe Budano, Chief Executive Officer of Indyme, explained "Our goal is to provide new and effective methods for retailers to more efficiently and consistently engage shoppers and to make real progress in the war against shrink.     Feedback from major retailers participating in recent field tests utilizing these first two Smart Sense technologies confirm this solution set delivers tangible value to retail operations and loss prevention.  In fact, test stores reported not only a surprisingly strong uptick in high-value merchandise sales but also higher customer satisfaction ratings and significant shrink reduction."
