September is All About Film at the California Historical Society With Four Film Screenings Showcasing the Storied Beauty, Complexity and Richness of Yosemite

Tuesday, September 9, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., San Francisco Time Travel Project: Gilded Lily:  Journey back in time as CHS reveals the stories, people, lost landmarks, and ephemeral wonders of the San Francisco Bay Area with Odd Salon, telling the city's weird and wonderful history. Speakers include: Marcelo Pontin, Hillside Mechanics: Building the Cable Cars; Todd Barrett, The Red Lights of Morton Street; Amy Widdowson Mains, Brief Biographies of the Gilded City; Jade Hoffman, The Aesthete and the Bohemians – Oscar Wilde in San Francisco; Annetta Black, Sutro's City at Land's End; Kaila Angelo, Wonders & the World in Golden Gate Park: the 1894 Midwinter Exposition.  $15 Admission, $12 CHS & Odd Salon Members.

Thursday, September 11, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Ten Lions Talk – Gary Noy, author of Sierra Stories:  Sierra College historian and Sierra Nevada native son Gary Noy will present an illustrated lecture on unusual and lesser-known stories of Sierra Nevada history. Saturday, September 13, 12:00 – 4:00 p.m., History for Half Pints: Arts, Crafts & Storytelling:  Every second Saturday CHS opens its doors for free to children and families for History for Half Pints. Join in celebrating Yosemite with special activities including: storytelling, scavenger hunts, puzzles, poster making, music, and dress-up! Wednesday, September 17, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Vertical Frontier Screening and Panel Discussion:  Special screening of Vertical Frontier followed by a panel discussion with filmmaker Kristi Denton Cohen and Dick Duane, lead attorney on the case to list Camp 4 on the National Register of Historic Places. Vertical Frontier is the character-driven story of the art, sport and philosophy of climbing the legendary big walls of Yosemite. Illustrated by spectacular old and new footage shot on those granite walls, the story is told by the climbers. $5 Admission, Members Free. Thursday, September 18:  6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Third Thursdays in Yerba Buena:  CHS is part of this monthly celebration in downtown San Francisco's Yerba Buena neighborhood full of arts, food, and drink! CHS opens its doors for docent-led tours of its current exhibition and view a display of special typography themed items from its archive.  Free.

Tuesday, September 23:  6:00 – 8:30 p.m., Museums and Diversity – Roundtable and Mixer Presented by the Bay Area Emerging Museum Professionals and CHS: Roundtable discussion with professionals who will share their research, professional perspectives, and personal thoughts about diversity in museums and the communities they serve. Thursday, September 25:  1:00 p.m., Reel California – Fate of Heaven Screening:  This moving film evokes the spectacular, primeval Yosemite of 100 years ago and looks at the contrast of Yosemite today, a park that must accommodate over three million visitors a year. "The most beautiful valley in the world" is seen through the eyes of those who struggle day after day to preserve it – the rangers, trail builders, firefighters and naturalists – and from the perspectives of the backpackers, rock climbers, tourists and backcountry skiers who came to revel in its sheer ageless beauty.
