When parents ask, “How can I stop my kid from being bullied?” or How can I get my kid’s school to stop bullies?” Mr. Mojo suggests these solutions:
- Protect your child the right way
“As a father myself, this is always on my mind,” he said. “First of all, keep lines of communication open between your child and yourself. Often times, the truth (and hints since teens don’t always like to talk) about what is happening at school or on Facebook will come out much easier during a casual conversation. Once you are aware of any potential bullying situations, make sure to address the appropriate authorities (school, local police, coaches, etc.). Follow up to make sure the situation has been addressed and ask your child if the bullying has stopped; if it has not stopped, report it again.”
- Cyber bullying accountability
Don’t be afraid to look! Make sure you have all of their login information for the social networking sites they are accessing. Also, ask about text message conversations they are having and know it is perfectly acceptable to periodically check their text messages, (with them around) and email. You may consider using software options to monitor your child’s use of the social media and Internet.
- The school’s rules
It is the school’s job to keep every kid safe. Many states have legislation that requires schools to implement certain policies and procedures. Become familiar with your school’s policy. If anything is unclear, ask questions. Know who handles reporting and what steps they will take to protect your child. Work with the school, not against them, and more will be accomplished. Don’t assume that the school knows about the situation (even if your child says they do). If it has not been reported in writing they may not be aware of what is taking place.
