Boeing, Hanmi Pharmaceutical, Impinj, Infinite Biomedical Technologies, the City of Grand Rapids and Kevin Ashton were all honored at LIVE! 2013.
NEW YORK, May 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — RFID Journal today announced the winners of the seventh annual RFID Journal Awards. The winners, honored at the RFID Journal LIVE! 2013 conference and exhibition, held last month in Orlando, Fla., are as follows:
- Best RFID Implementation: Hanmi Pharmaceutical
- Best Use of RFID to Enhance a Product or Service: Boeing
- Most Innovative Use of RFID: Infinite Biomedical Technologies
- RFID Special Achievement Award: Kevin Ashton
- Best in Show: Impinj
- RFID Green Award: The City of Grand Rapids, Michigan
A panel of independent judges and RFID Journal's editors chose the winners. In each category, at least five judges awarded points based on criteria established by RFID Journal. The main criteria for the awards given to end users were whether the deployment broke new ground, and the benefits it delivered to the company. The judges chose 10 finalists for the Best in Show award, and RFID Journal's editors picked the winner from those 10, taking into account input from attendees.
Hanmi Pharmaceutical was chosen for its system of tagging and tracking individual pharmaceutical products. Boeing was selected for a solution that replaces detailed visual inspection with radio frequency identification. Infinite Biomedical Technologies won for an RFID system enabling a prosthetic limb to operate more effectively and naturally. And the City of Grand Rapids was chosen for its use of an RFID-enabled recycling and refuse-collection system.
Kevin Ashton, the cofounder and former executive director of the Auto-ID Center, and a frequent contributor to RFID Journal, was presented with the RFID Special Achievement Award, in recognition of his leadership of the organization that developed the first Electronic Product Code (EPC) technology.
Impinj won the annual Best in Show award for its Speedway xArray system, consisting of an RFID reader combined with an integrated antenna and special software. The unit can be installed in a ceiling and create a 40-foot diameter read zone (wider than for a typical EPC Gen 2 RFID reader), thereby enabling real-time visibility into the locations of tags within that radius, and pinpointing their positions within a few meters.
