RFID Journal Announces Winner of Startup Challenge

Some of the industry's most innovative new companies entered to compete in the RFID Startup Challenge, held at last month's RFID Journal LIVE! conference and exhibition.

NEW YORK, May 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — RFID Journal announced today that Golden Environmental Mat Services (GEM Services) was selected as the winner of its first RFID Startup Challenge. This event took place at RFID Journal LIVE! 2015 (www.rfidjournalevents.com/live), the world's premier conference and exhibition focused on radio frequency identification (RFID) and its many business applications, which was held last month in San Diego, Calif.

For the first time in RFID Journal LIVE!'s 13-year history, early-stage RFID companies were invited to present their product or service, as well as their business and marketing strategies, for this exciting Shark Tank-like challenge. The finalists were Golden Environmental Mat Services, which is launching its SmartMat solution, including RFID, to locate and manage wooden mats used by the oil and gas industry, and to track each mat's location and deployment; U Grok It, which sells a low-cost handheld ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) Gen 2 RFID reader that works with iOS, Android devices and Microsoft Windows 8 tablets; Intellifi, which offers a product suite consisting of UHF RFID hardware products (Smartspots) and a cloud-based service (BRAIN); and Invisi-Tag, which provides a complete asset-tracking RFID system for landscaping contractors and other types of service providers.

"We were very impressed with all four finalists, which had well-developed solutions," said Mark Roberti, RFID Journal's founder and editor. "We're pleased to be able to offer these early-stage companies a helping hand in getting attention for their products."

A panel of RFID Journal editors selected GEM Services and its SmartMat technology as the winner. As such, the startup will receive $100,000 worth of free promotional services, including banner ads on rfidjournal.com, a webinar and ads in RFID Journal's digital magazine. The three other RFID Startup Challenge finalists will be provided with $25,000 worth of banner ad promotion on
rfidjournal.com.

"We are honored to have our SmartMat technology selected by the RFID Journal panel," said Steve Fisher, GEM Services' CEO and VP of corporate development. "Recognition of the value our asset-management solution will bring to the energy industry vindicates all of our development efforts.  Thanks, RFID Journal!"
