The Results Are In! Tru-D SmartUVC vs. Pulsed Xenon UV

Disinfecting Robot Listed No. 1 on Top 10 Hospital C-Suite Watch List

CLEVELAND, Jan. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — The importance of choosing the correct UVC technology is at the forefront of discussions among hospital leaders around the globe. With the announcement of the Top 10 Hospital C-Suite Watch List from ECRI Institute naming disinfecting robots as No. 1 top-of-mind technology for 2015, due diligence and research can help leaders understand the technology and bring to light those that don't fit the bill.

New data published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology includes the independent research results titled "Evaluation of a Pulsed Xenon (PX) Ultraviolet Disinfection System for Reduction of Healthcare-Associated Pathogens in Hospital Rooms." The highly regarded research team at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center stated that "Pulsed Xenon UV was less effective than continuous UV (Tru-D SmartUVC) in reducing pathogen recovery on glass slides with a 10-minute exposure time in similar hospital rooms."  Furthermore, the study states that "the efficacy of PX-UV was dramatically reduced as the distance from the device (beyond 48 inches) was increased," resulting in the need to move the unit into multiple positions. Previous studies by the same influential research team concluded that Tru-D SmartUVC is capable of total room disinfection, including high touch surfaces in shadowed areas, from a single position near the center of any room. Comparisons to pulsed xenon methods in the published scientific data concludes Tru-D SmartUVC is six times more effective eliminating Clostridium difficile (C. diff) spores, seven times more effective removing vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), and twice as effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

"Thought-leading researchers in infection prevention began publishing epidemiologically correct data specific to Tru-D SmartUVC more than five years ago," said Chuck Dunn, CEO and president of Tru-D SmartUVC LLC. "The groundbreaking initial results have been replicated in more than a dozen subsequent studies re-validating Tru-D's disinfection capabilities, whereas many other devices have avoided the scrutiny of independent research until now. The recent comparative study provides even more clarity for health care decision makers who seek the best practice and standard-of-care approach to reducing the risk of infection and improving quality of care."

As hospital-acquired infections continue to be a major threat to the health of patients and staff, hospital leaders must be diligent in choosing the technologies they invest in to help combat this serious problem. Until now independent comparative data on room disinfection devices was not available to allow hospital decision makers to choose the best technology for the reducing risk. Informed decisions save hospitals from inconsistent disinfection outcomes and risk of providing less than thoroughly disinfected patient or operating rooms, plus unexpected costs of device maintenance and increased labor hours associated with moving disinfection devices in multiple positions.

Ultimately, the decision process related to automated no-touch room disinfection is about choosing a device with the highest proven performance related to disinfection outcomes in unison with best in class ease of use that fits seamlessly into housekeeping workflow patterns.
