Power Engineering Magazine Names Projects of the Year Awards Finalists

TULSA, Okla., Oct. 5, 2009 — The editors of Power Engineering magazine and PennWell Corp. have announced 12 finalists for the annual Projects of the Year Awards program.

The finalists were selected from four major categories: Best Coal-fired Project, Best Gas-fired Project, Best Nuclear Project and Best Renewable/Sustainable Project.

The 2009 Best Coal-fired Project finalists are East Kentucky Power Cooperative's Spurlock Unit 4, Omaha Public Power District's OPPD Unit 2 and City Water, Light and Power's Dallman Unit 4 in Springfield, Ill.

Finalists for the Best Gas-fired Project are the Gissi combined cycle plant in Italy, owned by Abruzzoenergia; the Gateway Generating Station in California, owned by Pacific Gas & Electric; and the Emporia Energy Center in Kansas, owned by Westar Energy.

In the nuclear energy category, the three finalists are Entergy's River Bend wireless project in Mississippi, Pacific Gas & Electric's Diablo Canyon Unit 1 Steam Generator Replacement project in California and Entergy's SmartSignal at Waterford 3 project in Mississippi.

The Hastings hydrokinetic project in Minnesota, owned by Hydro Green Energy LLC and the city of Hastings, Minn., Ausra's Kimberlina solar thermal power plant in California and eSolar's Sierra SunTower solar plant, also in California, are the three finalists in the renewable/sustainable category.

The Projects of the Year Awards winners will be announced at a gala awards banquet on Monday, Dec. 7, at the Las Vegas Hilton, as part of the POWER-GEN International Conference and Exhibition and the co-located NUCLEAR POWER International Conference and Exhibition.
