Many of the attendees are key produce industry decision makers, buyers, site selectors and supply chain representatives.
At the Fresh Summit, the Port of Quincy highlighted the following reasons why it is "A Premier Location for Produce Packing, Shipping and Distribution" (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/1Am9Pp3dl2366G4TZRc9ig?feat=directlink):
- It is located in the heart of Washington state's major fresh produce (apples, potatoes, cherries, onions, pears, etc.) growing region in central Washington (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/qfeCbEQlMpJyvo_EiDyGaA?feat=directlink).
- It has some of the lowest and most competitive electrical power rates in North America and is ranked as one of the top low-cost rural locations in the United States for economic development (http://www.electronicsadvocate.com/2010/04/08/top-best-small-cities-for-high-tech-manufacturing/).
- It has a state-of-the-art Intermodal Terminal on the BNSF mainline (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/DRcGnwqF1s3jaNPztzyp_A?feat=directlink), which goes from Seattle to Chicago, and is only a few minutes away from I-90, a major cross-country interstate freeway.
- The Intermodal Terminal (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2X_Y47SnAhmK4H4n9MK4oQ?feat=directlink) includes 10,000 feet of track and a new container maintenance and cleaning facility, and over 1 million square feet of cold storage warehousing (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OB4yyAR49sk2SFEpM9b6bQ?feat=directlink) in close proximity to provide perishable and produce shippers with distribution, cross-dock and storage capacity in and out of Washington state.
- The Port of Quincy is in a Foreign Trade Zone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo5dEKHsqy0).
- The Port of Quincy is working in partnership with Cold Train and BNSF Railway to provide expedited door-to-door refrigerated intermodal service between the Pacific Northwest and Chicago/Indianapolis/Ohio Valley area markets (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/JcLlmMJAg-KEPb2kZ_N6OQ?feat=directlink).
- Since early 2010, several thousand containers of fresh produce (apples, potatoes, cherries, onions, pears, etc.), frozen products and/or other perishable cargo have been shipped on the Cold Train to/from Quincy and the Midwest (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6JeFJYuvUWvIC1gQu8YKHg?feat=directlink).
During the recent PMA Exposition/Tradeshow in Atlanta, many companies and participants expressed a strong interest in utilizing Cold Train to bring in fresh produce, frozen products and other perishable cargo from the Midwest (and eventually from the East Coast and Southeast) to the Port of Quincy Intermodal Terminal for distribution to various areas in the Pacific Northwest. The Port of Quincy will continue the momentum of its recent promotion efforts at the PMA Fresh Summit to recruit and attract packing, shipping, processing, warehousing and distribution companies to locate in the Quincy, WA area.
