SOUTHAMPTON, England, Oct. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Olympic Medalist and World Champion rower Richard Chambers has joined an elite group of athletes, adventurers and extreme sports enthusiasts to become a Nite Watches Unite Ambassador. As a Nite Ambassador, Richard will join a community dedicated to excellence in sports and adventure pursuits.
Richard began rowing aged 14 at the Coleraine Academical Institution in Northern Ireland and was coached by Bobby Platt. Not a natural runner, rugby player or cricketer, the 14-year old Richard found he took easily to the sport and says of his beginnings: "It's such an addictive sport, and I absolutely loved it from the start."
From junior competition Richard progressed to the seniors, and became a member of the British Rowing Team. He went on to win Gold at the 2007 and 2010 World Rowing Championships and has competed at the Beijing and London Olympics, winning a silver in this summer's games in the lightweight men's four.
Richard has always loved sports and the outdoors, and as a youth he spent most of his time on the Mournes or the Antrim Hills in Northern Ireland. At 15, Richard attempted to hike through the Mount Blanc Massif to climb Mont Maudit, but unfortunately the ascent of the peak wasn't to be. Aside from training, Richard now enjoys spending time with his young family, following Ulster Rugby and support several charities.
