Oakstone Publishing Achieves AANP Accreditation for Medical Examiner Training Developed to Meet New Federal DOT Mandate

Nurse Practitioners are Now Eligible for Continuing Education Credits through Oakstone's NRCME Plus Online Training System™

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Oakstone Publishing, one of the foremost providers of multimedia education for healthcare professionals as well as of corporate health and wellness resources, recently received notice that NRCME Plus Online Training System™ is now approved for continuing education by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). AANP is the largest and only full-service national professional membership organization for nurse practitioners of all specialties.

A recent U.S. Department of Transportation mandate, effective May 21, 2014, requires that healthcare professionals who desire to continue – or to start – providing DOT physical exams for interstate truck and bus drivers must first be trained and federally certified. NRCME Plus Online Training System™ was developed to meet this training prerequisite by one of the ten original consultants who convened in Washington, D.C., to develop the new federal DOT guidelines for certified medical examiners. Nurse practitioners who complete NRCME Plus, in addition to being eligible to sit for the federal certification test, can now also receive AANP continuing education credits.

"Achieving AANP accreditation for NRCME Plus Online Training System™ is part of our ongoing commitment to meet the educational needs of healthcare professionals," said Diane Munson, Oakstone's President and CEO. "NRCME Plus, a 100% online module-based training program, allows nurse practitioners to complete the program at home or the office, and at their own pace. Currently, over 90% of our NRCME Plus participants who have taken the DOT certification test passed on their first attempt."

Upon passing the DOT certification test, nurse practitioners will be able to offer the critical and vital service of providing DOT physical exams required to be obtained by the estimated more than 7 million commercial drivers. The U.S. DOT agency responsible for overseeing the national certification program has estimated that 40,000 certified medical examiners are needed to meet the demand for the required driver physical exams. And according to the DOT's national database of certified medical examiners on May 23, 2013, fewer than 1,000 medical examiners have been certified so far.
