Number of American College Students Attending Study Abroad Programs Continues to Grow at Steady Pace

Trend is positively impacting international summer programs for teens

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — The number of American students studying abroad continues to rise, with 2014 estimates showing that almost 300,000 students are currently receiving an education abroad. This new phenomenon may have found its roots before students even set foot on their college campuses. For the most ambitious individuals, it all began when they participated in a summer language study abroad program while still in high school. "I didn't have to persuade my daughter to take the leap, she found out which program she wanted to attend and convinced me this was the right thing to do before her senior year," says David Norwood of Lakewood, Colorado. "I can attest that it has been the most formative and life changing summer of her life. I'm convinced it's the best move before applying for college; it is an incredible confidence booster and positive experience."

Public and private high school students nationwide have different reasons to study abroad: improving their language skills, an AP class, preparing for the competitive college selection process, earning college credits, or simply enjoying their first summer away from family in an exciting international environment. "Both of my siblings studied abroad while in college so my parents were ready for it when I shared the idea of spending a month abroad before my sixteenth birthday," says Andrea, a sophomore at Los Alamitos High School in California. "My Spanish improved and I am proud to have earned college credits while attending language classes in Spain for a month. The program was both educational and super fun with participants from all over the country."

"We are proud to have motivated students who we feel will thrive during their time abroad; there is so much to gain for curious and engaged minds," says Christophe Chabaudie, Magellan's Executive Director. "Language teachers and counselors recommending our programs are helping students to realize their potential in a huge way." To help make the dream of studying abroad a reality, scholarship programs guarantee the participation of students with diverse backgrounds who all share the same desire to study abroad. Teens who have spent time abroad attest to the long lasting impact it had on their education and how the experience positively transformed them into world citizens. It has not only motivated them to return abroad while in college but it has helped encourage their peers to enroll in study abroad programs too. No matter what, American students are ready to explore the endless possibilities the world has to offer.
