NJ Senate Approves Measure Designating October as 'Italian American Heritage Month'

UNICO National through its Anti-Bias Committee launched grassroots lobbying effort to support legislative vote

FAIRFIELD, N.J., June 23, 2009 — UNICO National and its Anti-Bias Committee ("ABC") today thanked legislators in New Jersey for their overwhelming affirmative vote designating the month of October as "Italian American Heritage Month."

Kathleen Strozza, UNICO National President, stated, "We appreciate the legislators' support and we are grateful to the many Italian American organizations and individuals that helped make this possible." Strozza said UNICO is extremely thankful to the measure's (Bill SJR-73/AJR-97) sponsors, including NJ Senators Anthony Bucco, Joseph Vitale, Kevin O'Toole and NJ Assemblymen Frederick Scalera, Gary Chiusano and Scott Rumana. Strozza gave special thanks to NJ Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, who worked directly with UNICO National's ABC on a daily basis in moving the resolution ahead.

The resolution will aid in recognizing the enormous contributions made by Italians and Italian Americans to the Americas as well as the world and to the history of this country. During October, New Jersey residents would be encouraged to observe the month with appropriate activities and programs.

UNICO National Executive Vice President, Andre' DiMino, commented, "This resolution will show appreciation for Italian and Italian American culture and how it has enriched the lives of the people in this country while making them aware of the many struggles Italian Americans have faced in America. "

Anti-Bias Chairman, Dr. Manny Alfano, who worked to lobby legislators for the resolution, said he hopes it will help expose and end the unjust negative stereotyping of Italians and Italian Americans throughout the culture and allow Italians and Italian Americans to celebrate together and work to promote, protect and preserve their heritage and culture. "Italian Americans are a vital piece of the fabric of New Jersey and continue to make sizable contributions to all aspects of our culture," Alfano said.

UNICO National is the nation's largest Italian American service organization with local chapters throughout the United States. It was founded in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1922. Its volunteer members work to support charitable, educational, and service projects while promoting Italian heritage and combating negative stereotyping.
