Newest Edition of Association Learning Technology Report Suggests Potential for Growth in Microlearning and C-Level Learning Roles

CARRBORO, N.C., Dec. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Association Learning + Technology 2016, a report published by Tagoras, Inc. (http://www.tagoras.com/) and sponsored by YM Learning (formerly Digital Ignite), updates key data about the use of technology to enable and enhance learning in the continuing education and professional development market. The report also provides new insight into how the role technology plays in learning may evolve in coming years.

The report draws on responses from 174 participants in an online survey in fall 2015.  While the survey was very similar to the one used for the 2014 version of the report, Tagoras added a number of new questions in an effort to identify and analyze emerging trends.

This year, for the first time, the survey asked participants specifically about microlearning – learning experiences much briefer than a traditional course – and the use of technology to repeat, reinforce, or sustain learning. Participants were also asked whether data collected in their learning technology platforms is integrated with data from their other technology platforms. Lastly, a question was added to determine if someone in the organization holds the title of chief learning officer (CLO) or a similar C-level title that references learning, education, or knowledge.

"The CLO question strikes us as a good barometer for the amount of respect and emphasis given to learning in the organization," says Celisa Steele, co-founder of Tagoras and co-author of the report. She adds, "As the adoption and integration of sophisticated technologies increase, so will the demand for savvy, experienced leaders in the continuing education and professional development business."

Key findings from the report include:

  • Almost 90% of associations use some form of technology to enable or enhance learning.
  • More than half (52.8 percent) of associations that use technology for learning have increased their organization's net revenue from educational offerings.
  • Fewer than a third (31.5 percent) of organizations that report using technology for learning say they use technology to repeat, reinforce, or sustain learning after participants complete an educational product or service. Another 29.4 percent say they plan to in the coming year.
  • Among five emerging types of learning (microlearning, massive open online courses (MOOCs), flipped classes, gamified learning, and microcredentials), microlearning shows the highest rate of adoption – and arguably the greatest potential for growth. While only 18.1 percent currently offer microlearning, a full third (33.3 percent) have plans to in the coming year.
  • Close to 50 percent of organizations integrate the data they collect in their learning technology platforms with the data from other technology platforms they use.
  • Fewer than half (42.2 percent) of respondents said that someone at their organization holds the title of chief learning officer (CLO) or a similar C-level title that references learning, education, or knowledge.

The report will be officially released as part of a free Webinar scheduled for 1:00 ET on January 7, 2016.  Registration information is available at http://www.tagoras.com/webinars/.  Media representatives may receive an advance copy of the report by contacting Tagoras.
