National Disaster Relief Foundation Challenges Americans to Give Back on #GivingTuesday

BALTIMORE, Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — After Black Friday deals and Cyber Monday steals, the National Disaster Relief Foundation (NDRF) reminds Americans to give back this #GivingTuesday, a global movement dedicated to generosity and giving. The NDRF has pledged to give 100% of every donation received on Tuesday, December 2, directly to families whose lives have been devastated by disaster.

According to IBISWorld, American consumers were expected to spend $36.69 Billion this past weekend. #GivingTuesday taps into the generous spirit of the holiday season and the momentum of Black Friday and Cyber Monday — days that have become synonymous with holiday shopping.

"It's our hope that Giving Tuesday inspires Americans to give back in better, smarter ways to charities that have a real impact on people's lives," said Clinton Pipkin, Founder and President of the Foundation. "We are challenging everyone to research where their donation will do the most good — and in turn we make an extraordinary promise that every single dollar we receive will be given directly. What we offer is the very definition of charity."

Officially launched in 2014, the sole mission of the NDRF is to provide direct monetary relief to Americans who have lost their homes to disasters. Families use the help provided by the NDRF to pay for items that their insurance companies and other organizations do not cover, which gives flexibility for them to focus on their own family's particular unmet needs.

"Our Foundation demonstrates that a simple and selfless approach to helping others has not been lost in America," continued Pipkin. "Donors want to know that their contributions have an immediate impact and we give them that transparency. They don't want to see their goodwill used to pay for bloated salaries or administrative expenses."

The #GivingTuesday movement was started by the 92nd Street Y (92Y) and quickly gained steam with the help of the United Nations Foundation and other founding partners. The NDRF joins more than 10,000 organizations working together to create more meaningful results.

"Giving Tuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism," said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. "The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world."

To join the NDRF's #GivingTuesday initiative, make a donation online. Donors who live in Maryland can also support the Foundation's Maryland Gives More campaign. If you would like to sponsor a fundraiser of on the Foundation's behalf, please contact them directly.
