CARRBORO, N.C., Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — A new white paper released by Tagoras, a consulting firm specializing in the global market for lifelong learning, provides insights into use of mobile learning – or "m-learning" – by trade and professional associations as well as the significant impact it could have on how these organizations market and deliver continuing education.

Titled "Mobile Learning and Associations: A Chance to Move the Dial," the white paper draws on data collected in a survey conducted by Tagoras for its 2014 Association Learning + Technology report.  Out of the 200 respondents to that survey, 88.7 percent indicated their organization offers technology-enabled or technology-enhanced learning. Over a third of this group (36.8 percent) said they offer a mobile version for at least some of their learning content. Another 28.3 percent said that, while they didn't yet offer any mobile learning content, they had plans to start within the coming year.

"Clearly many association are already doing m-learning or are on the verge of it," said Tagoras managing director for publications, Celisa Steele, "With this publication, we wanted to consider what the implications of that could be for the business of continuing education and professional development."

Drawing on Tagoras research as well as a variety of other sources, the 19-page white paper offers:

  • An analysis of the mobile landscape and the potential for m-learning
  • Four arguments for why organizations may want to invest in m-learning
  • Four approaches to developing m-learning and an overview of some of the key technology questions
  • A primer on developing a strategy for mobile learning
  • Commentary by InReach, sponsor of the white paper, on mobile learning as the next phase in the evolution of continuing education
  • Three brief cases studies covering how associations are using m-learning. The organization's discussed are the National Association of College Stores (NACS, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), and the Maryland Association of CPAs (MACPA)
