The nine artificial islands planned in the project's concept would feature a development on each island with a zone dedicated to residential and mixed-use purposes. Some units would be single-story, while others would be four to six stories high, with stores on the ground floor, offices on the second floor, and residential use on the third floor and above.
Residential units are located within an inner portion of each artificial island. Commercial properties are zoned on the outer rings, while cultural activities and open plaza spaces are zoned for the innermost ring. This results in an idyllic setting for a quiet and secure residential neighborhood that fits the needs of singles, couples, and families.
These physically close neighborhoods, referred to as transit-oriented developments, encourage tightly-woven communities by constructing housing ideal for interactions with neighbors and socializing with friends. Housing is designed to be no more than a 10-minute walk from a high-speed Maglev rail stop, with close and easy access to offices, restaurants, businesses, grocers, and places of employment. The walkable nature of the island's zones encourages foot traffic, decreasing the impact of vehicles on the environment and eliminating the need to maintain a car.
The Menorah Islands Project concept also incorporates renewable energy practices. Using wind walls, solar panels, and other methods to harvest and utilize natural sources of energy would not only be environmentally-friendly, but they would contribute to the low cost of living. The use of alternate sources of energy ensures costs are kept down for residents and business owners throughout the islands.
By employing these tactics, the Menorah Islands Project artificial islands complex aims to address the needs of those who live in lower-income brackets. The close living quarters would eliminate the costs needed for maintaining a car; and alternative energies would impact rates for electricity, water, and gas, making those bills comparatively cheaper than in older mainland communities. This reduction in financial stress is not only an economic good, but a moral good as well.
In time, the Menorah Islands Project plans to share its inexpensive power generation technologies with the mainland in an effort to reduce the cost of living and alleviate poverty there as well.
