New Memoir Details Familial Betrayal, Chance at New Life

Carl Weast Shares Life Story in Hopes That Others Will Learn to Protect Themselves from Deceit

LYNCHBURG, Va., Oct. 1, 2009 — For 47 years Carl Weast enjoyed his happy marriage and his family of five children. But when his wife Doris passed away, he was thrust into the most difficult fight of his life, struggling with grief and betrayal at the hands of his close family and relatives. In his new collection of memoirs, "My Big Fight was with an Unfaithful Family" (published by AuthorHouse), Weast chronicles his trials, tribulations and subsequent healing process.

Everything in Weast's life steeled him for the events that would unravel after his first wife, Doris, died. Told in vivid detail, "My Big Fight was with an Unfaithful Family" begins with Weast's early childhood, enlistment into the Marines during the Korean War and his successful career at the Virginia Beach police department where he ascended from a patrolman to a captain of his own precinct through good judgment and sound instincts.

It was with this preparation that he met with the tragedy of his wife's death and the feeling of betrayal when his five children tried to gain control of his life and estate. To add to his misery, Weast also discovered his late wife's journal, where she displayed her mental illness and chronicled her numerous infidelities with other men throughout their marriage. Weast tells of his struggles and how he managed to triumph in the face of these odds. He writes:

Allowing someone to take advantage of you is the coward's way out. If you have done nothing wrong, you will come out the winner if you remain determined. You may lose some family members during the process, but that could be a good thing as well. When a large sum of money is involved, some family members will be extra nice to you while in reality they may be sitting back like vultures, just waiting to get their hands on your estate. It could be a blessing in disguise if you discover their intentions prior to your death….

I have lost five children, eight grandchildren, a stepfather, a brother, and a sister, but I still feel like a winner. I consider that my past life. I'm now living my other life, which I enjoy very much. You will never forget, but if you accept it you will learn to live without it, and the pain will lessen as time goes on. I have forgiven everyone in my heart because I refuse to live with hate inside me. I will never associate with any of them again, and I can fully accept that in my new life.

Frank and insightful, "My Big Fight was with an Unfaithful Family" is full of hope from a man who has persevered through many hardships by remaining steadfast and strong.

Carl Weast was born in Kannapolis, N.C., finished college and became an ordained minister. He has been remarried for five years.
