The acquisition is the first step in Madonna's long-term project to build a world-class rehabilitation hospital in Omaha. The 110-bed, state-of-the-art facility, with a full continuum of inpatient rehabilitation care, will cover 250,000 square feet and will include a pediatric rehabilitation unit. The $93 million project will begin construction this year with a target completion date of 2016.

DLR Group, Omaha, in association with Michael Graves and Associates, as well as Page, will provide architectural and engineering services and lead the design team.

Founded in Omaha, DLR Group is an interdisciplinary design firm providing architecture, engineering, planning, and interior design for a diverse group of clients. DLR Group has 19 offices from coast to coast and in China. ARCHITECT magazine, the official publication of the American Institute of Architects, ranked DLR Group as the #1 firm in the United States in 2012.

Michael Graves & Associates has been in the forefront of architecture and design since AIA Gold Medalist Michael Graves founded his practice in 1964. Today, the practice comprises two firms that provide planning, architecture and interior design services, as well as product design, graphic design and branding. Since his paralysis, health care design has become a major focus for Michael Graves and his partners. A national speaker and advocate for patients' rights, the Center for Health Design recently named Michael Graves one of the 25 most influential people in health care design.

Page, formerly Page Southerland Page, is a 400-person multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering firm with five U.S. office locations including Dallas, Texas. Page is a national leader in health care design and planning.

"We are pleased to have the unmatched expertise of these firms to help us design the most progressive rehabilitation hospital in the country," said Marsha Lommel, president and CEO of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.

Paul Dongilli, Jr., executive vice president and COO at Madonna, is leading the planning for the Omaha Campus. "This is a rare opportunity to build a world-class facility that specifically meets the needs of rehabilitation patients from the ground up and at every touch point of the hospital," he said.

"DLR Group welcomes the opportunity to lead the design process," said Senior Principal Tom Penney. "Our team of architects and engineers is committed to provide building and site design solutions supporting Madonna's goals for patient care and rehabilitation."

Michael Graves said, "I cannot imagine a more important or fulfilling project for me and my team to design at this time.  After my paralysis, I spent several months in other rehabilitation hospitals learning how to live successfully with my new normal.  With that perspective of the patient and the architect, I'm so pleased that we now have the opportunity to design a facility that is equal to the astounding care provided by Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital."

"We are excited to be a part of Omaha's exceptional health care community," Dongilli added, "and help patients from throughout the Midwest and across the country access the highly specialized rehabilitation services of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital."

Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the nation's foremost facilities for medical rehabilitation and research.
