Better Life America Restores Dream of Homeownership When Banks Refuse to Help

OCEANSIDE, Calif., April 20, 2009 – Betsy Sullivan's home in Montgomery, N.Y. had been on the market for over two years. She had originally listed the seven-bedroom, four-bathroom home with an apartment for $575,000; after two years without a sale, Sullivan dropped the price to $439,000. Even then, she couldn't sell the house — and the apartment wasn't even renting.

Falling farther behind in her mortgage payments and unable to cut her losses through a sale, Sullivan turned to her mortgage company for help. But, as people across the country are finding out, mortgage loan servicers are proving unwilling to work with distressed homeowners. Sullivan's mortgage company was no different, dismissing her pleas for help and imposing more late fees.

"I was hoping for a forbearance, a payment adjustment, anything so I would not lose my house. Our home was the safety net for my daughters and me," Sullivan stated. "But the mortgage company wouldn't give me the time of day, let alone help me out. I didn't know where to turn."

Dismayed and believing she had no options left, Sullivan began looking into bankruptcy, until by chance a friend's brother connected her with Better Life America ). The company provides immediate, legal loan modification services to homeowners facing foreclosure. In most cases, Better Life America clients are people like Sullivan who have already turned to their mortgage companies for help — and run headlong into brick walls.

By the time Sullivan came to Better Life America, she was over 20 months behind in her mortgage payments and $70,000 in arrears, and her home was already scheduled to be sold on the courthouse steps. It seemed like a hopeless situation.

But even at that point of extreme hardship, Better Life America was able to negotiate with the lender on Sullivan's behalf. The beleaguered homeowner, who had been paying 9.05% interest, ended up with a fixed rate of 4.5%; the $70,000 in late payments and fees was tacked onto the back of her loan so she could become current on her payments and move forward with a clean slate.

"I think it is despicable that my own mortgage company couldn't be bothered to help me," Sullivan reflected. "Better Life America truly came to my defense. They have stayed by my side and helped me through every critical and painstaking part of the process. They helped me help myself and gave me renewed hope for a brighter tomorrow."
