Kung Fu Plaza Becomes TripAdvisor Recommended

Kung Fu Plaza Races Into Top 20 Asian Restaurants in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 10, 2012 — Kung Fu Plaza Thai & Chinese, which is the oldest and most authentic Thai and Chinese restaurant in Las Vegas, received the “Recommended on TripAdvisor” endorsement from the world’s largest travel website. The honor, which is reserved for 3+ rated properties, came with news that Kung Fu Plaza had broken into the top 20 Asian restaurants and top 300 restaurants in Las Vegas, and one of only a few restaurants that serves Thai cuisine.

“In a city with so many fine restaurants, many of them with world-renowned brands, we are both honored and humbled,” said Alan Wong, general manager of Kung Fu Plaza. “But we also look at this as a win for Thailand because so many Asian restaurants lean toward Asian fusion while we have remained true to our Thai heritage.”

While Kung Fu Thai & Chinese Restaurant has a long history as the first Thai restaurant to open in Las Vegas, it is also one of the few to have earned a cult following among celebrities, foreign dignitaries and even royalty from its modest off-Strip location. However, this wasn’t always the case. The restaurant enjoyed more than a decade in the Plaza Hotel (Las Vegas) when the hotel was considered the crown jewel of Downtown Las Vegas.

“When we moved from the Plaza Hotel to Chinatown, our lifelong patrons – Thai and Asian visitors and celebrities – found us easy enough,” said Wong. “But in order to reach everyone on the Las Vegas Strip, we had to create one of the largest takeout and delivery service areas possible and rely on word-of-mouth recommendations from people who have an affinity for authentic Thai cuisine and Chinese favorites.”

In recent years, word of mouth has taken on a new dimension because of social media, social networks and travel sites like TripAdvisor. As more people learned that Kung Fu Plaza delivers to hotel rooms and even convention booths up and down the Las Vegas Strip, the restaurant regained its reputation as the oldest and most authentic Thai and Chinese restaurant in Las Vegas.

“Many people, especially celebrities, enjoy coming to Chinatown to dine in with us because they feel relaxed and at home, away from all the attention and glam of the Las Vegas Strip,” said Wong. “It is also true that most people are starting to know us for our delivery service. It makes us unique in that few if any of the top-rated restaurants on TripAdvisor are known for takeout and delivery. Even then, I don’t believe any maintain a menu as large as ours with more than 250 authentic Thai and Chinese dishes.”

Some of the growing testimonials on TripAdvisor tell part of the new story being written for Kung Fu Plaza. One family stumbled upon Kung Fu while riding a hotel shuttle past the restaurant. One couple wanted authentic Thai food and hotel staff immediately recommended Kung Fu. Another couple discovered Kung Fu when they decided to eat in at their hotel but didn’t want hotel room service.

“We cannot thank these wonderful guests enough because all of them contributed to the ‘Recommended on TripAdvisor’ endorsement,” says Wong. “When people take the time to share their experiences on social networks and sites, it helps us live up to our name. Kung Fu means ‘to work harder’ in Cantonese.”
