NEW YORK, March 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — KIWI magazine announces the winners of its National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day 2014 contest. In honor of the annual event created by KIWI in partnership with the School Nutrition Association that's celebrated across the country during National School Lunch Week—KIWI joined with Whole Kids Foundation to offer three $1,000 grants to participating schools.

The winning schools, which were selected from more than 200 applicants, are as follows: Bigfork Elementary School in Bigfork, Montana; Moss Haven Elementary School in Dallas, Texas; and Dixon Elementary School in Brookfield, Wisconsin. All contest entrants submitted an application describing what they are doing to be green and how they would use the grant money if they won.
"National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day has generated an enthusiastic response from schools across the country," says Andrea Barbalich, KIWI's editorial director. "We are thrilled to see so many schools that are making nutrition and sustainability a top priority for their students."
Among the outstanding efforts from the winning schools: Bigfork Elementary has a school garden that's used as an outdoor classroom for students. Moss Haven Elementary has a farm with organic raised vegetable beds, chickens, and a compost pile. And in addition to having a PTO-supported school garden, Dixon Elementary also recycles, composts, and uses rain barrels to increase sustainability.
KIWI's National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day takes place each October. For parents, this is a day to have lunch with their children in the cafeteria and talk about healthy eating. For schools, the event allows them to showcase their nutritious meals and green initiatives and give parents more information about lunchtime.
