NEW YORK, Jan. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — KIWI magazine has announced the winners of its 2015 National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day contest. Three elementary schools received $1,000 grants from KIWI and the Whole Kids Foundation to help improve their lunch programs.

The winners are: East Elementary Jackson R2 Schools, Jackson, MO; Hopewell Elementary School, Hopewell, NJ; and Magnolia Montessori School, Oxford, MS.

National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day, an annual event created by KIWI in partnership with the School Nutrition Association that takes place during National School Lunch Week, gives parents an opportunity to eat in their children's cafeterias and learn more about the school's efforts to serve nutritious meals. Hundreds of schools nationwide participated in Lunch Day 2015.
To enter the contest, school representatives explained why they took part in Lunch Day, described their school's healthy eating initiatives, and outlined how the grant money would benefit their lunch program.
East Elementary Jackson R2 Schools, whose lunches incorporate locally sourced produce and dairy, will use the grant money to establish a fresh salad bar. Hopewell Elementary hosts an annual Farm to School event featuring demonstrations from area farmers and chefs and will put the grant toward funding additional events throughout the year. Magnolia Montessori provides local food via its own garden and partner farms and plans to purchase more child-size kitchen tools so students can be more involved with food preparation.
