Kill the Cup Launches #KillTheCupSD to Eliminate Waste at San Diego Coffee Shops

May 1-10: Upload a selfie with a reusable mug to win gift cards to local coffee shops

SAN DIEGO, May 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Kill the Cup and The San Diego Coffee Network launched today #KillTheCupSD, San Diego County's first-ever reusable mug contest. The campaign, which will run May 1-10, is a friendly competition that encourages San Diegans to upload "coffee selfies" with a reusable mug using the Kill the Cup mobile app.

Each photo will serve as one entry into a daily prize raffle where contestants are eligible for $25 gift cards from participating San Diego coffee shops. Each photo also serves as one entry into the grand prize raffle of $250 in gift cards to local coffee shops.

Users can "check-in" to participating coffee shops to receive additional raffle entries. Participants are encouraged to share their photos on their own social media channels using #KillTheCupSD.

Kill the Cup, a San Diego-based nonprofit, has been running reusable mug contests on college campuses for the last year and a half and it's become a nationwide environmental movement. Kill the Cup campaigns are essentially a game, where coffee shops compete to serve the highest percentage of drinks in reusable cups.

During #KillTheCupSD, participating coffee shops will track the percentage of drinks served in reusable cups. Collectively, the county-wide goal is to break 2 percent, a threshold that Starbucks has been unable to hit (albeit, for a year).

The International Coffee Organization recently reported that coffee consumption is expected to increase 25 percent in the next five years. "We must reduce our reliance on single-use disposables," said Drew Beal, CEO, Kill the Cup. "And that's what we're working on at Kill the Cup."

According to Beal, the process for environmental behavior change needs to be fun and engaging. By posting photos of prize winners and leaderboards, Kill the Cup aims to reach a tipping point where it becomes a social norm to carry a reusable cup.

Previous campaigns by KillTheCup.com, which have focused on college campuses, have resulted in higher percentages of drinks being served in reusable cups. In addition to the waste reduction benefits, participating coffee shops have seen 10 percent higher revenues compared to baseline periods.
