The Joy of Swimming like the Europeans in Natural Pools

DENVER, Oct. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — A walk along a lake or the sea, river or stream – water holds a certain fascination for mankind and puts them under its spell. A True Classic among Pools: BIOTOP Natural Pool

Each Natural Pool is individually planned and the most cost effective method of construction is recommended depending on the space available. In planning Natural Pools there is generally a 1:1 ratio of the swimming zone to the regeneration zone and the depth is at 6 ½ ft. in the swimming area. Regarding the use of technology, all equipment, such as the surface skimmer, the brook, the fountain, the BIOTOP plant filter, the carbonator and the cleaning kit are powered by a single pump, which is located in an all-round pump shaft. The hydraulic dimensioning is optimized so that on request even solar-powered systems can be built.

A natural swimming pool visually enhances the garden all year long. Besides being able to enjoy it in summer, this combination of natural pond and swimming pool opens up a whole new world to the user: dragon flies, frogs and little water salamanders populate the natural pool just a few days after the planted zone is finished. And in winter the frozen "pond" turns into a private skating rink.

The Next Generation of Biological Pools: BIOTOP Living Pool

It looks like a conventional swimming pool, but has the characteristics of a Natural Pool, which allows you to swim in natural, untreated water. While in a Natural Pool the filter function is carried out by plants and microorganisms, in the Living Pool this function is taken over by a special phosphorus filter with granules that bind phosphorus, the main source of nutrients for algae. Thus, the algae are literally starved. The remaining algae, which are always present in natural waters, are removed by a pool robot.  All technical components are installed hidden under the sun deck.

The water runs through a biological filter, which is housed under the decking. Here, impurities are filtered and bacteria are removed. The phosphorus contained in the impurities is broken down into dissolved phosphate. Subsequently, a pump draws water from the bio-filter and pumps it through the PhosTecUltra filter, where the dissolved phosphate is bound by adsorption. The pump runs constantly under low power.

30 Years' Experience in Planning and Building

BIOTOP has many years of experience in the construction of Natural Pools. It was, after all, Peter Petrich, founder of BIOTOP, who first had the idea to design a swimming pond in the garden and to market it commercially. This concept started in Austria in the year 1985 and went all around the world.

The Living Pool, which has been on the market since 2009, draws on the technically advanced components of the Natural Pool. "Our innovation is a perfect symbiosis of natural water and classic pool design," BIOTOP boss Peter Petrich is convinced. "We are able to offer crystal clear water completely without the use of chlorine or other toxic substances."

Conversion of a Conventional Pool: Simple, Quick and Cost Effective

With the Living Pool Converter System an existing swimming pool can easily be turned into one that operates biologically. The current pool will only be changed minimally. The existing water cycle, comprising a skimmer, a pump and sand filter can continue to be operated; only the chlorination will no longer be used.

A biological circulation system will be additionally incorporated, consisting of a biological filter, a small pump and a phosphorus filter. All components are integrated into a single shaft, which is installed in the ground next to the existing pool and connected to both an intake and an outflow pipe of the existing pool.

At Greenbuild in New Orleans the two products will be presented to interested US clients, partners and stakeholders. BIOTOP's president Peter Petrich will be available to share his lifelong expertise and overwhelming passion for the real natural water experience with the American public.

Meet Peter Petrich, BIOTOP CEO and inventor of the natural pool, at the GREENBUILD 2014 in New Orleans, the premier event for sustainable building.

BIOTOP was the first company worldwide to introduce an ecological alternative to the conventional swimming pool – the natural pool – in 1987. Subsequently, the product was developed further and patented and received numerous international awards.

BIOTOP is with around 66 licensees – including six US partners – number 1 worldwide. Over 1,000 natural pools have been built by BIOTOP and more than 4,000 pools in cooperation with its partners. BIOTOP Natural Pools are built in the USA, in Europe, in New Zealand and Australia.

Market leadership is maintained through consistent R&D. The latest innovation is the Living Pool, a biological swimming pool that looks like a classic pool, but uses no chemicals. The Living Pool already accounts for roughly 25% of total sales. Thanks to the Converter System, conventional pools can also be converted to a Living Pool at minimum cost.

The headquarters are located in Klosterneuburg, Austria. BIOTOP's US subsidiary is domiciled in Denver, CO. Sustainability is an important aspect of the organizational culture, both on an economic and environmental level.
