Fully Bored Holiday? Nite Watches Picks This Season’s Alternative Holiday Destinations

SOUTHAMPTON, England, Aug. 9, 2012 — Do beautiful views, good food and a great hotel make a great holiday? Not so, says the Nite Watches team – where’s the adrenalin kick? We all love a beach holiday, but why not get more adventurous? There are plenty of other places to feel the sand beneath your feet. Try the Sahara for starters ….

That’s just what Danny John-Jules (the “Cat” from Red Dwarf) and fellow motorcyclist Graham Hoskins did this spring. Nite teamed up with the pair – supplying chronograph watches and running an online competition around the event – as they attempted one of the most iconic desert racing routes, the 1996 Dakar Rally from Granada to Senegal. The pair journeyed through Spain, Morocco and the deserts of the Western Sahara raising money for Riders for Health.

Not into motorcycling? How about dugout canoes, camels, donkeys, horses and ferryboats? Friend of Nite, modern-day African explorer and anthropologist Julian Monroe Fisher, is off to Africa for five years … Fisher is planning to follow the journeys of legendary explorers like Stanley and Livingstone – albeit equipped with a modern Nite outdoor watch!

For cycling pair Rob Lucas and Thomas Riley, the journey is also more important than the destination. The cycling duo is currently raising money for WaterAid on a 20,000-mile “around the world for water” ride. The freewheeling friends are keen to “absorb, not observe, the cultures [they] pass through.” Twenty countries and four continents might be too much for two weeks, but the pair represents the true spirit of the Unite community – to get out there and experience the world.

Nite Watches founder Roger Green commented: “We’re constantly amazed by the tenacity and spirit of the Unite community. Whilst you might not have time to cross continents or circumnavigate the globe, there are plenty of small-scale adventures that are fulfilling and challenging alternatives to spending two weeks on the beach. However, the beach is a great place to relax while planning your next adventure!”
