Cheryl A. Price Reveals the Value of Kindness in Full-color Illustrated New Children's Book
WHEATON, Ill., Sept. 29, 2009 — "The Golden Aspen" (published by AuthorHouse), the charming new children's book by Cheryl A. Price, follows the life of a small tree nestled within the Colorado Rockies, and its struggle to be accepted by the other trees in the mountains. The small tree's tale is chronicled through Price's whimsical prose and captured visually with lively, colorful illustrations.
The small tree stood three feet tall, towered over by the taller cedars and cottonwoods of the mountains. The other trees looked down on the young tree because, in comparison to the oak, fir and ponderosa pine, the small tree was neither strong, beautiful nor colorful.
But all the animals of the mountains love the tree and its owl friend tells it that one day it will be hailed as a prince of the forest. But when the other trees hear this remark they laugh, telling the tree that it will never be anything more than a puny, quaking aspen.
One day the now taller, but still young tree sees something on the plains far away and asks the owl to investigate. The owl flies down to the plains and upon flying back reports that he sees the two-legged creature called a boy approaching. When the boy reaches the mountains where the tree lives, the aspen fears for the boy who will be cold once night falls. The aspen offers to shelter the boy from the cold and calls on the animals to help protect him with their bodies' warmth. In the morning the little boy thanks the tree and promises to return one day.
Years later, the boy returns a grown man and searches out the aspen to reward it for its kindness many years before. The man promises that the tree and its descendants will wear the gold of royalty each year during the fall. From that time on, during the fall, the mountains shimmer with gold to mark the kindness shown by "The Golden Aspen."

Cheryl A. Price is a former librarian and newspaper writer and editor. She has earned her master's degrees in history, library science and communications. Since her childhood she has enjoyed the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and modern stories for children. "The Golden Aspen" is Price's first children's book. She has previously published "Never Give Up: A Biography of Thomas L. Thomas," the widely read story of a man who grew up in an orphanage, lived through the Great Depression and was a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II.
