Effective Aerial Advertising Over Holiday Shoppers

TAMPA, Fla., Dec. 14, 2011 — Black Friday has become the biggest shopping day of the year. It also kicks off a frenzy of shopping for the four weeks until Christmas. And this year was no different.

Advertisers presented holiday sales starting earlier than ever. They invested millions of dollars into flyers, newspaper ads, TV and radio ads. But many people getting these ads either won't shop at all, or will quickly forget about the ad once they are headed to the stores.

"Imagine targeting the crowd of shoppers with your company's name or product while they are shopping!" suggests Patrick Walsh, president and founder of AirSign, Inc. "As they shop, they look up to see the name of your company or product flying above them. For some, it may be just the reminder or suggestion they need for that 'hard-to-buy-for' person."

Walsh is speaking of AirSign's unique repertoire of aerial advertising services. These include banner ads, billboard ads, logo boards, helicopter ads, skywriting, and advertising blimps. A brief description of each will demonstrate the effectiveness this advertising could have for a company.

An aerial banner is a strip of nearly invisible material displaying a message written in clearly visible seven-foot tall letters that is pulled behind an airplane. The plane passes over the shoppers repeatedly, each time reinforcing the message in their minds.

Aerial billboard ads are very similar except that they are larger — up to five thousand square feet — and rectangular in shape. The message may contain a logo, a special, an address, a phone number, or a web address.

Aerial billboards can also be towed behind a helicopter. The advantage for helicopters is, because of the upward pull they provide, helicopter banners can be much larger — up to fifty thousand square feet.

Skywriting is also very effective. The pilot actually writes the message in the sky. "We shoot paraffin oil into the exhaust of the plane," says Walsh. "As it heats in the exhaust, the oil produces an environmentally friendly smoke that forms letters as tall as skyscrapers." The smoke eventually dissipates while the message lingers in the minds of those who have watched it form.

AirSign recently added advertising blimps to its repertoire. "These are not balloons fixed to an establishment," explains Walsh. "These are larger manned blimps customized with the message of the participating company written on the sides." Blimps quietly float over shopping areas, prominently suggesting a product or special offer.

"Christmas season is a perfect time to take advantage of aerial advertising," Walsh concludes. "It is the ideal way to put an aerial 'flyer' before the eyes of the public at the very time they are most likely to act on it."
