TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 4, 2011 — The American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) today announced the selection of Peter B. Angood, MD, as its new chief executive officer.
Angood, who currently is president and CEO of a Boston-based health care consulting firm, replaces Barry R. Silbaugh, MD, MS, CPE, FACPE, who served as CEO for four years. ACPE is the nation's oldest and largest medical management educational association for physicians.
Angood said he was humbled and honored to be chosen for the position. As CEO, he plans to focus on expanding ACPE's educational offerings and other initiatives while keeping pace with evolving technologies.
"After three decades of highly successful growth, ACPE and its membership are now well positioned to provide a balanced, strongly collaborative and refreshed physician voice within organized health care during these times of profound change," he said.
Angood, an ACPE member since 2001, brings to the College a distinguished record of service in the field of patient safety. In addition to his role as president and CEO of the consulting firm PBA Solutions Insight, Angood also served as chief medical officer for the GE Healthcare Patient Safety Organization (PSO). He recently completed a two-year engagement with the National Quality Forum and National Priorities Partnership as senior advisor for patient safety.
Before becoming a consultant, Angood was chief patient safety officer and vice-president for The Joint Commission, where he oversaw annual development of the National Patient Safety Goals and other patient safety initiatives. Angood also worked with the World Health Organization Patient Safety initiative and helped lead development of the WHO Collaborating Center for Patient Safety Solutions.
Clair Callan, MD, MBA, CPE, FACPE, president of ACPE and chairwoman of the Board of Directors, said Angood was the clear choice to strengthen the College's position as the premier organization for the lifelong growth and support of physician leaders.
"ACPE has acquired an enviable reputation for educating physicians in the business of medicine," said Callan. "With Dr. Angood as CEO, ACPE will continue this important work as well as explore options for greater involvement of physicians in the changing field of health care."
The six-month search for a new CEO focused on ACPE members and was conducted by the College and Jennifer Grebenschikoff, president of the Physician Executive Leadership Center.
