Dr. Edward S. Gronka of Advanced Aesthetics Reveals the Surprising Statistics About Breast Lift Surgeries

Atlanta plastic surgeon shares two major reasons why breast lifts have had an exponential growth in popularity

ATLANTA, Aug. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) showed that breast lift surgeries have increased by more than 70 percent since 2000, growing at two times the rates of breast augmentation. Dr. Edward S. Gronka, Atlanta board-certified plastic surgeon and breast specialist, confirms the popularity of the breast lift procedure, which is intended to lift the breasts to a more youthful position on the body.

"For many years, the focus of cosmetic breast surgery was on increasing the size of the breasts, and breast augmentation remains the most popular cosmetic procedure for women," says Dr. Gronka, one of the team of plastic surgeons at Advanced Aesthetics, PC. "But breast lifts are being performed more often because women now want overall breast enhancement, which may or may not include breast augmentation."

In addition to lifting the breasts, which improves the sagging caused by pregnancy, age or weight loss, a breast lift also improves the shape of the breast.  Excess skin is removed and the surrounding tissue is tightened to provide a more youthful contour; the size of the areola can also be reduced if needed. The overall effect of a lift procedure is a more aesthetically pleasing breast, which dovetails with the wishes of many women who want better looking—but not necessarily bigger—breasts.

Dr. Gronka notes two reasons that women may be pursuing breast lift surgery in record numbers, which topped 90,000 in 2013 per the ASPS: the Mommy Makeover phenomenon and the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.

  1. Mommy makeovers. The rise of the mommy makeover suite of cosmetic surgeries has allowed women to reverse the effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding on the body. The breasts often experience unwelcome changes from pregnancy, including sagging and loss of volume. A breast lift is often part of a mommy makeover if the woman's primary concern is about sagging breasts rather than lost volume.
  2. Weight loss. An unintended result of losing weight and adopting a healthy lifestyle may be sagging breasts, as the skin supporting them may have been stretched while overweight. If a woman has sufficient breast tissue, a breast lift alone can greatly improve the appearance of the breasts and provide a more attractive overall silhouette.

Breast lifts can be combined with breast augmentation if lost volume is also a significant concern. The two surgeries are complementary and result in a comprehensive breast enhancement if increased size is desired. A consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast procedures can help a woman determine whether breast lift surgery can achieve the aesthetic improvements she seeks.
