WASHINGTON, Nov. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The Disabled Veterans National Foundation (www.dvnf.org), a nonprofit veterans service organization that focuses on helping men and women who serve and return home wounded or sick after defending our safety and our freedom, is pleased with the Department of Veterans Affairs' decision to grant $8.8 million dedicated to transitional housing project renovations and the purchase of vans for transporting homeless Veterans at these facilities.
The funds will go to 164 projects across 37 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico through the VA's Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Program. The funds for rehabilitating transitional housing projects will go to existing operational locations, while the funds for vans will be intended for these organizations to provide services for homeless Veterans they serve so that they can provide transportation to medical appointments or outreach events in their communities.
Annual grant funds through the GPD Program are given to bolster the available housing for the nation's vulnerable homeless Veterans. The goal is to help the VA's community partners to be equipped to properly take care of the Veterans they serve.

According to a release by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the VA has committed over $1 billion in fiscal year 2014 for the solution and prevention of homelessness among veterans. The agency has set a goal to end Veteran homelessness by 2015, and since 2009, it has decreased more than 17 percent.
