Death Wish: An Attainable New Year's Resolution for 2014

With only 8% of individuals achieving their New Year's goals, TermLife-Insurance.com collects statistics and data on mortality rates and offers quick, easy and affordable way for consumers to secure the best quote for life insurance policies

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — While many people begin the New Year with lofty goals of weight loss and wealth accumulation, the experts at TermLife-Insurance.com recommend setting more attainable objectives: Focus on staying alive and funding your death wish.

While staying alive seems simple enough, the odds of dying are higher than one might suspect. A study by the National Safety Council found the following:

  • Odds of dying from heart disease: 1 in 6
  • Odds of dying from cancer: 1 in 7
  • Odds of dying from motor vehicle accident: 1 in 98

Interestingly, these odds pretty closely align with the top five causes of death, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

  1. Heart diseases
  2. Malignant neoplasms (cancer)
  3. Chronic lower respiratory diseases
  4. Cerebrovascular diseases (stroke)
  5. Accidents

While there are no big surprises in the "Top Five" list, there are some shockers in the most unusual causes of death noted by Wikipedia:

  • An overdose of coffee mints
  • Accidental choking on arthropod body parts during a cockroach eating contest
  • Water intoxication during a "Hold Your Wee for Wii" contest

With all these deadly distractions, it's no wonder that only 8 percent of people achieve their New Year's resolutions. Of course, odds of success improve when people just focus on staying alive.

But what about the death wish? One's death wish is the life desired for loved ones. For example, a death wish could be for the surviving spouse and children to afford living in the same home with enough money for college. Funding one's death wish with life insurance helps your loved ones avoid the living threats of poverty and dreams destroyed.

Three in 10 American households are uninsured, and half say they need more life insurance, according to LIMRA. "Many people don't have term life insurance because they think they can't afford it, or because they've never been offered term life insurance quotes," says Brad Cummins, Owner of TermLife-Insurance.com. "They don't realize they can search for affordable insurance online in a matter of minutes."

And with minimal funeral costs reaching $7,045 and the average cost to raise a kid estimated at a staggering $241,080, it can be pretty tough for the surviving family to maintain a minimum standard of living without life insurance benefits. "Term life insurance isn't just for breadwinners," Cummins says. He recommends stay-at-home parents and even children obtain policies. Those who get basic policies through their employers are often well-served to buy supplemental term life insurance policies to better protect their loved ones.
