CTEK Urges Motorhome Owners Not to Rely on Their Vehicle's Alternator to Charge and Maintain Its Battery

LONDON, June 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — CTEK, a global battery maintenance and care brand, is advising motorhome owners of the potential risks associated with relying solely on the vehicle's alternator to provide sufficient charging power to the battery.

Traditionally, the alternator was considered the best way of powering and charging any vehicle's battery. However, as a result of the amount of electrical items now found in modern motorhomes, there is an increased strain on the internal battery components. In order to avoid battery related breakdowns, which are both inconvenient and costly, a battery should be regularly charged as part of a maintenance routine.

As alternators provide a trickle charge to the battery, it is often the case that the unit never reaches its optimum charge level. This can eventually lead to acid stratification in the battery which is a serious, and sometimes irreversible, problem. Stratification can occur when the motorhome's engine is only running for short periods of time – for example when stationary in areas with no electrical hook up – as the alternator does not have a chance to complete a full charging cycle.

These problems can be avoided by using a CTEK D250S Dual smart charger. It can be left safely connected to the vehicle for long periods of time, meaning it is ideal to use when the motorhome is in storage.  The device is specifically designed to control and optimise the flow of power from the alternator to the battery, providing advanced multi-stage battery charging, protection and maintenance. Furthermore, the device can be powered via solar panels, which is perfect for those times when camping without access to mains power.

Katariina Stahl, director of sales and marketing at CTEK, commented: "Now that summer has arrived and many are heading away in their motorhomes, vehicle owners should be wary of relying on the alternator to provide the correct charge. Whilst such charging can be effective in the short term, the excessive strain placed on the battery of a modern motorhome means that the battery needs to be kept at the optimal charge level at all times. This rarely happens when relying purely on the alternator.

"By using a CTEK smart charger, it is possible to always maintain the correct charge level which avoids costly breakdowns and unwanted disruptions to holidays."

Whether it is a caravan, boat or car battery charger that is required, CTEK smart chargers are the perfect companion for any vehicle.
