China Invention Patents Granted to Shanghai Guangdianbao Information Technology Company Limited for Ultrasonic Positioning and Geo-Fencing Technology

SHANGHAI, China, June 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — On May 8th, 2013, Shanghai Guangdianbao Information Technology Company Limited was granted two invention patents by the State Intellectual Property Office of the People's Republic of China. Guangdianbao at www.guangdianbao.com, the Shanghai-based company, now becomes the first in the world – before Shopkick in the US – to own invention patents in the technology that uses ultrasonic signals for accurately determining the geological position of a smart phone.

The company was founded in May 2011, though independently developing the ultrasonic positioning technology since 2010. Currently, Guangdianbao provides O2O (online to offline) mobile marketing services to 92 retail brands and over 3,000 stores and shopping malls in China's major cities, and it has been called "Shopkick in China" by the media. Similar to Shopkick, a leading O2O mobile marketing company in the US, Guangdianbao installs in each member store a soap-box sized device that emits dynamically changing ultrasonic signals. The company lets users download the Guangdianbao app for free and rewards them for physically walking into member stores to "check in": when a user walks into a member store, his or her cell phone "hears" the ultrasonic signal, decodes it, the app knows he/she is already inside the store, and rewards and promotions pop out on the screen.

Based on the ultrasonic technology, Guangdianbao has developed a practical UGF (Ultrasonic Geo-Fencing) system that can push out accuracy marketing content (such as ads, coupons and promotions) to users who come close to a geological position (e.g., the Section C on the third floor of a shopping mall, or the grooming department corner in the basement level of a super store). Conventional GPS, ambient WiFi and BTS/Cell-ID positioning methods are limited by the availability of clear and stable signals, and the accuracy is often poor and unreliable, not suitable for accuracy marketing purposes. The company's UGF system, on the other hand, can always know with an accuracy of a few meters that a user has entered an area covered by the ultrasonic signals. The system is practical and convenient for commercial use. The ultrasonic device costs less than $20 each, and the installation is extremely easy: one just plugs it into a power outlet.

The company also developed a mathematical model for quantitatively analyzing O2O mobile marketing activities and prediction of economic results. The model can calculate how much extra revenue O2O mobile marketing services can generate for a participating store based on inputs such as the density of users of the mobile app, the percentage of active users, the parameters of the store's customers reward system, the conversion rate of customers walking into the store, the average spending of customers and the profit margin.

Retailers and shopping malls in China are now following the footsteps of the West to implement O2O mobile marketing strategies to attract foot traffic to their physical stores. Guangdianbao's technology and services provide a practical solution to such needs. With one billion cell phone users and the world's largest consumer markets, the mobile marketing business in China has tremendous growth potential.
