Asad, an entrepreneur in Dania, Florida, is regarded as a telecom expert and is the CEO of Q Link Wireless, LLC, which is an approved provider of the Lifeline Assistance program.

"Q Link Wireless provides a free cell phone with up to 250 free monthly minutes to qualified low-income individuals and families," said Asad, who has over 20 years of executive experience in the telecommunications industry.

Asad is a strong advocate of the Lifeline Assistance program. According to Asad, many people do not fully understand what Lifeline Assistance is and what it is not. He says his educational series on CBS Miami News aims to help people "understand how the program began, how it works and why it is vitally important to the long-term safety and security for those who are qualified and are truly in need of the service."

Lifeline initially offered landline telephone access to qualified households in the 1980s. During the Bush Administration, the program was updated to include wireless phone service. In the articles, Asad describes how the Lifeline program is funded by the contributions of communications companies.

"Lifeline cell phone service is provided by service providers like Q Link Wireless, and not the government," said Asad. "Furthermore, cellular service providers are not required to offer free cell phones—it is a choice. Q Link Wireless is one Lifeline provider that provides a free cell phone for subscribers to use with the free phone service."

Program eligibility varies by state, but is generally established by meeting state specific low-income requirements, or participating in other assistance programs such as Medicaid, Food Stamps (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and most other government assistance programs.

"We are a mobile society that thrives on the availability of immediate communication," said Asad. "Being able to wirelessly call friends, family, job opportunities and 911 emergency services is now a fundamental need."

So far, five of Asad's eight articles are currently live on CBS Miami News' website. Asad says the last three articles will be published in the upcoming weeks.
