Celestial Navigation 101: Navigating the Seas Made Easy

Certified instructor-evaluator offers a handy and comprehensive reference for students, apprentices and reviewers

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Grown out of all the author's teaching courses since 2000, and continuously improved over the years from the thoughtful contributions of more than 100 of his students, this book aims to give navigators a solid base to determine their position at sea using a sextant for fixes on the sun, moon, stars and planets. The material is presented in a clear, simple and organised fashion which is ideal for class work, but will also prepare a sailor for a Celestial Navigation Certificate through self-study.

Lucid and well-paced, Celestial Navigation starts with fundamentals and definitions; this ensures that a motivated student need not bring anything more to the table than his or her willingness to master the subject. Richly illustrated, it includes a chapter with more than forty pages of review exercises covering all topics.

The cleverness of many of the concepts, explained here, will bring about great intellectual joy and satisfaction. Whether used by a recreational sailor or an individual pursuing a professional certification, this book explains the principles of Celestial Navigation, and how to do simple calculations requiring no more than the addition or subtraction of angles or times. The manual prepares mariners for the official tests such as those organized by the RYA, ASA, Sail Canada and other certification agencies.

The book is available online: it can be purchased in soft cover at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Indigo, Chapters and local marine bookstores, and in pdf format for tablets at Google Play.
