EDMOND, Okla., Aug. 9, 2012 — Mystery writer Eric Wilder's wife Marilyn is the cook in their family. Even though he's the author of four successful cookbooks, she scoffs at his culinary ability and maintains he can't boil water.
Growing up in Louisiana, Wilder liked reading his mother's cookbooks and especially the little anecdotes sometimes included. He began putting weekend recipes — favorites of his mother, aunts, wives, former mothers-in-law, etc.– on his blog, adding an anecdotal story with each recipe. His weekend recipes caught on with the followers of his blog and are now searched by cooks from all over the world.
Wilder's first wife was a French-Acadian from a town just south of New Orleans. When their marriage failed, he lamented what amounted to also divorcing her family he'd grown to love. Lily, his mother-in-law, was the best Cajun cook he'd ever known. Fittingly, his first cookbook, Lily's Little Cajun Cookbook, was a tribute to her cooking. The book is a hit, not only for its authentic Cajun recipes, but also because of the amusing family stories added to the mix.
Wilder's newest novel, City of Spirits, is the second in his French Quarter Mystery series that features New Orleans sleuth Wyatt Thomas. "Readers like the authentic locales and local color, as well as the mystery," Wilder says. His newest cookbook, Mama Mulate's Little Creole Cookbook, features a character that appears in both French Quarter mysteries. Mama Mulate, Wyatt's occasional business partner, is a Tulane English professor and also a voodoo mambo.
Wilder's wife Marilyn is wrong. He can boil water, but his true talent lies in writing fiction, creating a rich, Southern stew of ghosts, voodoo, and local culture. His cookbooks, including Big Billy's Little Texas Cookbook and Southern Comfort Food Cookbook are available as eBooks at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and across the web for $.99 each.
