"Unfortunately, I think we all know someone who has struggled with some sort of addiction," said Susan Kemppainen, editor of BestMedicalDegrees.com. "The National Institute of Health estimates 1 in 10 Americans have some sort of substance abuse disorder, either through drugs or alcohol, even nicotine. Over 23 million Americans over the age of 12 experience substance addiction, and sadly this number is increasing daily. We've not done a good job, until relatively recently, of treating addiction as a disease and not a moral failing of some sort. Scientists have been able, through CAT and MRI scans, to prove the effects of drugs and alcohol on the brain and has moved the treatment of addiction from a criminal act to more of a behavioral issue that can be treated through rehabilitation and cognitive therapy."

More Americans are gaining access to mental health care through The Affordable Care Act by the inclusion of mental health and rehabilitation treatment mandated in insurance plans offered by the insurance industry.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the need for qualified substance abuse and behavioral counselors will rise by 31% over the next 10 years with employment opportunities available in hospitals, physician offices, out-patient and long-term care facilities.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates master degree prepared counselors in either mental health or rehabilitation to earn a medium income of $38,500.
