CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — The American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) today announced publication of the 2015-2017 Perianesthesia Nursing Standards. Formally titled, Perianesthesia Nursing Standards, Practice Recommendations and Interpretive Statements, the publication serves as the authoritative set of care practices for which perianesthesia nurses are responsible.

"Nurses working in hospitals and surgery centers around the country follow established standards of care," explained Susan Russell, BSN RN JD CPAN CAPA, Director for Clinical Practice. "ASPAN defines the standards of care for perianesthesia nurses—those responsible for patients before and after procedures involving anesthesia, sedation, and analgesia. The publication emphasizes a culture of safety for both patients and nurses during this vulnerable period of time."
The Standards were originally published 32 years ago and have grown to a 152-page document that is updated biannually, according to Jennifer Allen, MSQSM, RN, CPAN, Standards and Guidelines Strategic Work Team Coordinator. Specific content includes principles of safety and ethics, perianesthesia standards, evidence-based practice recommendations, position statements, resources, and interpretative statements. "The 2015-2017 document is an invaluable resource and a 'must have' for nurses practicing in all phases of perianesthesia care," Ms. Allen added.
Approximately 40 million anesthetics are administered annually in the United States. ASPAN represents the interests of over 60,000 nurses who practice in preanesthesia and postanesthesia care, outpatient surgery, and pain management settings.
