Aquatech Awarded a Major Desalination Contract for India's First Ultra Mega Power Project

PUNE, India, June 3, 2009 — Aquatech International Corporation has been awarded a contract to design, build, and operate a seawater desalination plant for India's First Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) at Mundra in Coastal Gujarat. The 4,000 MW coal fired plant is owned by Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL), a Tata Power group company.

Aquatech will provide a Pretreatment system that includes lamella clarifiers followed by two-stage pressure filtration and a Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) system that consists of four streams of SWRO banks, followed by two banks of Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO).

Aquatech will be supplying this project on an Engineering Procurement & Construction (EPC) basis along with an O&M contract, and is targeting to produce 12 MLD of treated water by November 2009 and to commission the entire SWRO plant by mid-2010.

One of the larger desalination projects to come up in India in recent years, the CGPL UMPP, utilizing SWRO technology, will produce 25,200 m3/day of desalinated water for various end-user applications. A part of desalinated water will further be treated through a BWRO system and ion exchange to make high purity water for boiler makeup.

Tata Power is India's largest private sector power utility with an installed generation capacity of over 2300 MW. The CGPL UMPP, awarded on a 20-year BOOT basis, will be India's first private sector power project using supercritical boiler technology, and is expected to be the most energy-efficient plant in the country.
