This switch will be determined by the first time 50 companies with individual annual revenues of over $5 million have changed their public-facing Internet addresses to a full 128-bit address and completely abandoned all use of IPv4. The contest is meant to spur discussion of the difficulties that will likely be faced before a full switch to IPv6 can occur. Amid the rumors and concerns surrounding the growing shortage of IPv4 addresses, little attention has been paid to how communication will be affected during the upcoming transition.
"Unless a worldwide transition takes place in unison, administrators will be faced with a communication conundrum that will likely delay a complete switchover indefinitely, in my opinion," said Art Reisman, CTO and cofounder of APconnections. "To remain accessible to everyone, in addition to establishing IPv6 addresses, existing IPv4 addresses must also be retained."
