The authors assert that although interests of several special interest groups do not represent the interests of most Americans, politicians promote these self-serving agendas with zeal as if special interest groups represent all Americans. Many of these special interests go against key American values; these are the very values that have historically supported a free market economy that has made America the most viable experiment in the world.
Cameron Fateri asserts, "Socialism is a bankrupt idea that has failed in many countries mostly because it explicitly forces dependency, and implicitly encourages dogma and stagnation." He asks, "why is it that new thought leaders want to experiment with a time-tested catastrophe? Why do we want to promote big government and a social system to control, limit, and restrict Americans?"
The authors refer to the findings of a Senate Budget Committee where it was reported that between food stamps, housing support, childcare, Medicaid, and other benefits, the average U.S. Household below the poverty line received $168.00 a day in government support while the median household income of working Americans is $137.13 a day. Therefore, it makes more sense for someone to stay home, live on government-sponsored subsidies than work, and earn a living. Even with all these negative trends, the authors have an optimistic vision for America and predict America will find a way back to her roots and stay true to the work of the founding fathers. The emerging property of this national introspection will allow Americans to favor small government that promotes a free market economy. Americans will support women and men for their choices whatever they may be, we will want society to take care of the environment, its elderly, and those who are physically, financially, as well as mentally disadvantaged. Furthermore, Americans will not accept funding for education to be less than ten percent of that of the annual military budget and we will not allow prisons to receive more funding than local schools; both the former and the latter are the case today.
In the future, will these ideologies make someone a republican or a democrat? That's uncertain but it would be safe to conclude these values make such a person a true American, someone who has been given the gift to evolve socially and culturally while staying loyal and committed to the American narrative.
